Abstract

The research study described the experiences of staff nurses regarding their work-related stressors, well-being, and coping strategies for managing work-related stress. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry, this study involved 15 staff nurses from selected government hospitals in Quezon Province who responded to an open-ended written narrative questionnaire. Two themes were identified regarding their work-related stressors: structural and operational demands and clinical and professional pressures. For well-being, six themes emerged: physiological exhaustion; emotional and psychological strain and exhaustion; work-life interference; satisfaction in life; strategic self-care and boundary setting; and cognitive and emotional resources. Regarding coping strategies, seven themes were identified: professional mastery and resource management; cognitive and emotion-focused coping; meaning-focused coping; social support coping; self-care and physiological regulation; appraisal coping; and maladaptive coping and barriers to resilience. The results of the study were incorporated into the study's output, a nurse’s resiliency program. This program aims to help staff nurses identify work-related stressors and improve their coping strategies. The study will especially assist future staff nurses in becoming resilient.
