Abstract

This descriptive-correlational study examined the relationships among school attendance, Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) reading level, and academic performance of Grade 7 learners in Maharlika National High School, Bislig City Division, during School Year 2025-2026. Documentary data from all 107 Grade 7 learners with complete available school records were included through total enumeration. A researcher-developed documentary data extraction sheet was used to organize days present and absent, attendance rate, Phil-IRI reading category, and general average. Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson product-moment correlation, and Spearman rank-order correlation were applied. Learners demonstrated Excellent Attendance overall, averaging 189.77 days present (SD = 3.95), 7.22 days absent (SD = 3.96), and a 96.33% attendance rate (SD = 2.01). Most learners were at the Instructional Phil-IRI level (61.68%), followed by Frustration (21.50%) and Independent (16.82%). Academic performance was Satisfactory overall (M = 83.56, SD = 4.69; range = 73-93). Days present correlated positively with general average, r(105) = .653, p < .001, while days absent correlated negatively, r(105) = -.655, p < .001; attendance rate also showed a positive relationship, r(105) = .655, p < .001. Phil-IRI reading level was strongly and positively associated with academic performance, rho = .757, p < .001. Mean general averages increased across reading categories from Frustration (77.61) to Instructional (84.09) and Independent (89.22). The findings indicate that attendance and reading level are meaningful correlates of Grade 7 academic achievement and support a Learner Support Intervention Program integrating attendance monitoring, reading remediation, progress tracking, parent coordination, peer tutoring, and teacher-led support.
