This study ascertained the role that the learning environment had in mediating the link between pedagogical competence and student engagement. Adapted survey questionnaires were given to 300 criminology students selected through stratified sampling. Data was collected through online platform and statistical tools used were mean and standard deviation, Pearson r and Path analysis. The results demonstrated that teachers' levels of pedagogical competence are quite high, along with very high levels of student engagement and learning environments. There is a significant relationship between pedagogical competence and student engagement, pedagogical competence and learning environment, as well as learning environment and student engagement. The present study found support for learning environment as a mediator in the pedagogical competence–student engagement relationship. Investigating the learning environment as a partially mediating variable helped to clarify how pedagogical competency and student engagement function.
