From Text to Tech: Teachers' Multimodal Practices in Teaching Writing in English Language Education

Abstract

The increasing integration of digital technologies in education has transformed English language teaching, particularly in the area of writing instruction. This study employed a qualitative research design using the Straussian Grounded Theory approach to explore the multimodal strategies utilized by English language teachers in teaching writing, their perceptions and experiences in implementing multimodal instruction across technological platforms, and the guiding framework that may be developed from their instructional practices. Using criterion purposive sampling, eight English language teachers with at least two years of teaching experience participated as key informants and completed both the essay-type questionnaire and individual semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed through open coding, axial coding, selective coding, and theory generation following the procedures of Strauss and Corbin. The findings revealed that teachers strategically integrate textual, visual, auditory, and interactive modes through various technological platforms such as Google Classroom, Canva, YouTube, PowerPoint, and other digital resources to support writing instruction. Analysis generated two central phenomena: Strategic Integration of Multiple Modes to Enhance Writing Instruction and Navigating Opportunities and Challenges in Technology-Supported Multimodal Writing Instruction. These were integrated into the core category Adaptive Contextualized Multimodal Writing Instruction. The participants perceived multimodal instruction as an effective means of increasing student engagement, improving comprehension, facilitating idea generation, and supporting the writing process. However, challenges related to technological access, digital literacy, time constraints, and resource availability were also identified. Through constant comparative analysis and theoretical integration, the Adaptive Contextualized Multimodal Writing Instruction Theory emerged, explaining how teachers continuously adapt multimodal resources, technologies, and instructional approaches to address learners’ needs and contextual realities while promoting meaningful writing experiences. The study concludes that effective multimodal writing instruction requires the purposeful integration of multiple modes, flexible use of technology, and contextualized pedagogical decision-making. The resulting framework may serve as a guide for English language teachers, curriculum developers, and educational leaders in strengthening multimodal writing instruction across diverse learning environments.
