Abstract

This study enhanced an Educational and Developmental Program for nursing students living in a nursing residence by examining their educational and developmental experiences and challenges. Guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Sister Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model, and Ludwig von Bertalanffy’s Systems Theory, the study employed an intervention variant mixed-methods design. Phase 1 used a phenomenological qualitative approach with 10 purposively selected nursing students who had resided in the dormitory for at least five months or one semester and had completed the required dormitory orientation. Semi-structured interviews, observations, field notes, and audio/video recordings were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase thematic analysis until data saturation was achieved. Six themes emerged: Academic Resources and Support; Social and Interpersonal Relationships; Emotional Resilience and Independence; Discipline and Professionalism; Spiritual Development and Engagement; and Complexities and Limitations. These findings informed Phase 2, in which a three-month Enhanced Educational and Developmental Program was developed. In Phase 3, five nursing experts validated the program. The overall Face Validity Index was 0.98, while all six program components obtained I-CVI scores of 1.00; both S-CVI/UA and S-CVI/Ave were 1.00, indicating unanimous expert agreement on content relevance. The findings show that nursing-residence life can support academic focus, peer relationships, emotional adaptation, professional formation, and spiritual engagement while also presenting resource, adjustment, financial, and social challenges. The validated program is recommended for institutional implementation, continued monitoring, and further evaluation in diverse residential nursing-education settings.
